Here’s a quick reminder of some helpful tips to follow after extracting a wisdom tooth:
The wisdom teeth are molars that grow completely in the back the mouth. These teeth frequently cause complications since the mouth is often too small to accommodate them. They can also grow horizontally and in these cases, they will push on the adjacent teeth which can sometimes be painful.
When should I extract my wisdom teeth?
As soon as they erupt, if they do not have enough space to erupt completely. The sooner they are removed, the less complications there can be. In cases where the wisdom teeth do not have enough room to erupt, they will put pressure on the other teeth which can start moving. It is therefore preferable to extract a wisdom tooth when the tooth is young, and its roots are shallower.
What should I expect for the surgery day?
If desired by the patient, he is first sedated to reduce his level of stress. If that's the case, the dentist will ask you to attend the surgery appointment accompanied by a family member or a friend.Local anesthesia is then administered to freeze the area of extraction. Once the anesthesia is done, the dentist starts by making an incision in the gum to reach the tooth. The tooth is then removed. The process is quite simple and takes approximately 30 minutes per tooth. Stitches are then done to close the incisions and the patient is seen a week later to remove them and make sure the healing is going well.
Know that during the extraction of the wisdom teeth, you don't feel any pain since you will be under the effect of local anesthesia.
What should I expect after the surgery?
In some cases, the patient may experience some pain and sometimes slight swelling in the jaws for a few days. Taking anti-inflammatory pills or antibiotics are required as well as applying ice to help recover and reduce the swelling. It is best to eat soft food to not apply any pressure on the jaw. It is recommended to rinse your mouth thoroughly after each meal to reduce the risk of infection.
Everything should go back to normal 3 to 5 days after the extractions.
