At the dentist
The dentist will place a gauze at the operated site to stop the bleeding.Keep the gauze in place for twenty to thirty minutes and maintain a good pressure on it.
It is very important to tell your dentist if you are taking anticoagulants so that extra precautions are taken to avoid more severe or uncontrollable bleeding.
To reduce bleeding
It should be expected that the operated site bleeds an hour or two after the operation. It can continue to ooze for up to 24 hours.
Do not worry if you feel bleeding profusely. Mixing blood and saliva in your mouth can give you that impression.
Replace the gauze with another clean gauze or tea bag if the bleeding continues. Tea contains tannic acid which has the property of contracting blood vessels, which will help stop the bleeding.
What you need to do:
To reduce swelling
Your face may swell within 24 hours of surgery. The swelling may last 5 to 7 days and is completely normal.
What you need to do:
To relieve the sore jaw
You may feel pain and stiffness in the jaw after the operation and have trouble opening your mouth for 5 or 7 days.
What you need to do:
Here are some symptoms that you can observe during your healing:
After 24 hours and until complete healing
Smoking and Alcohol
Refrain at all times from smoking tobacco, cannabis or other during the healing of extraction sites. Wound healing could be slowed down by the many chemicals in a cigarette and increases the risk of post-operative infections.
Refrain at all times from drinking alcohol during the healing of your surgery. Alcohol impairs blood clotting and increases the risk of post-operative infections. The dentist usually prescribes medications following surgery such as painkillers or anti inflammatory. These must never be mixed with alcohol since they can be toxic and potentially dangerous to health.
